This collaborative project in urban ecology investigated how avian community structure changes across socioeconomic gradients within the metropolitan area of San Juan, Puerto Rico. By pairing ecological field surveys with bird observation data, we used hierarchical models of species communities to evaluate how environmental variables across income-level neighborhoods shape bird communities. Specifically, these models allowed us to analyze variations in species richness and abundance while accounting for urban habitat variations between high- and low-income areas. This work directly explores the "luxury effect" in urban environments, shedding light on how economic disparities drive unequal urban biodiversity—providing critical, data-driven insights for equitable urban planning and city conservation.
