This project utilizes an extensive camera-trap network to evaluate mammal and avian community dynamics across a steep elevational gradient in Central Peru. By conducting surveys in previously unsampled regions—including the rugged terrain of Otishi National Park —this work aims to assess how key species, from apex predators like jaguars and Andean bears to diverse mesocarnivore guilds, structure local communities. Because community composition shifts drastically across altitudes, the analysis focuses on functional groups to understand how ecological roles and trait distributions change along environmental gradients. By bridging community ecology with functional diversity, this research will establish a critical baseline for biodiversity monitoring and community-based land management in previously undocumented regions of the Peruvian Andes.
