Isotopes assessment for bear diets
This project utilized stable isotope analysis to investigate global variations in bear diets and their relationship to human-wildlife conflict. By collecting hair samples from museum specimens and field sites, I evaluated δ 15N levels as a proxy for carnivory across seven bear species and paired these data with an extensive literature review of reported dietary habits and conflict incidents. Our results revealed that δ 15N signatures differed more within species than among them, indicating high individual variation. Crucially, the lack of correlation between trophic position and conflict frequency suggests that livestock predation by bears is an opportunistic behavior rather than a direct response to natural food availability dynamics—offering essential data for managing human-bear interactions.
