Community-based monitoring of cinegetic species
This was a WCS project that evaluated the effectiveness of sustainable community wildlife management within Peru's Tamshiyacu Tahuayo Communal Regional Conservation Area, located in the Yavari Samiria Great Landscape. I led a month-long Amazonian field expedition, collaborating closely with local community members to establish 84 landscape grids using track surveys and camera-trap stations. Utilizing single-season occupancy models, we assessed the impacts of hunting pressure on a suite of critical mammal and bird species, including tapirs, peccaries, and cracids. Our models revealed high occupancy rates for large ungulates and no statistically significant negative effects from localized hunting, providing a confident, data-driven indicator that current community management practices are successful and offering a robust monitoring framework for long-term biodiversity conservation.
