This project mapped the national distribution of the Andean bear (Tremarctos ornatus) across Peru. By compiling published literature alongside extensive unpublished data obtained through direct collaborations with field researchers, I built a comprehensive open-access database, which I published on GBIF. I then used species distribution models (SDMs) to compare estimates derived from the full dataset with those based solely on published records, which were heavily clustered within protected areas, mostly in northern and southern Peru. By actively identifying and reducing these geographical biases, this work provides a significantly more accurate, representative baseline for national conservation strategies and landscape-level corridor planning.
